Windswept, grim, highland country, it's held out against the Chwahir for centuries. Once known as Jessachwa (settled by Chwahir refugees) only Chwahir would know how to successfully fend off their former fellow country-beings. The Chwahir of Jessachwa allied perforce with the inhabitants who called themselves Dei Chael, as a branch of the Dei family--driven out of Sartor as exiles after political troubles--settled here. The Dei had been flirting with pirates, so the history of this area is turbulent indeed. But some of the best jewel mining in the world is done in these mountains, giving the inhabitants a solid income enabling them to deal with the rest of the world.
