The act of looking into a scry stone (or object that permits one to access the scrying plane) to search for signs of other mages, or to communicate. Scrying is not like a camera, you cannot see the physical world through them, though some mages are adept at conveying to another scryer what is around them, just as some scryers are adept at getting images even if the sender isn't sending them deliberately.
One cannot scry someone else unless they are focusing on the scry plane, though extremely powerful mages have sometimes been able to sense well-known mental "signatures" via the scry plane.
When dena Yeresbeth becomes common, scrying changes radically.
